My Grade 7 class is currently reading Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. In a recent chapter, the “R” word is used, which led to an important class discussion.
We talked about why that word is hurtful and how language shapes the way people feel and are treated. Students reflected on how Melody is misunderstood and how words can include or exclude others.
Instead of just talking about it, we took action. The class created a short video sharing what to say if you hear someone use the word — focusing on staying calm, being respectful, and choosing kindness.
I am proud of their courage and hope their message encourages others to speak up.
